I know nights are busy with sports, and kids are antsy to be done, but I strongly encourage all of you to hold on just a bit longer! The final weeks of school will be fun (yes!), but will also be filled with end-of-the-year assessments and work samples. Thank you for understanding! April 28: Zoo Field Trip This Week's Objectives: Reading: Theme Question: How can we learn about the Earth? Focus Question: What can we do to help the Earth? We will continue our map/globe skills this week, and move into a more in depth study of the seven continents. We will also have a few lessons on conservation for Earth Day. Skills: Reading informational text, using context clues to determine unknown words, leaving tracks of our thinking. Spelling: ear, eer, ere words (see list to the right) Writing: We are finishing our Imogene's Antlers stories, and will review persuasive writing in an essay about taking care of the Earth. Kids should be focusing on conventions, format, and self-editing. Math: We will work on telling time to the half and quarter hour this week. This is more difficult than you might think, due to the positioning of the hour hand, so practice at home is always helpful! We will continue to work on problem solving and triple digit addition/subtraction strategies in math centers. April 7: School Resumes April 13: PIR Day (no school for students) April 17: Memories with Mom (7:45 - 8:15 am) This Week's Objectives: Reading: Theme Question: How do living things grow and change? Focus Question: Inquiry Question: How do seeds grow into plants, and why do they need air, water, soil, and space? Week 4 is our review week, which leaves us with some time to do some EGGcelent EGGtivities! I usually do them before spring break, but with our guests observing, I wanted to stick to the curriculum pretty tight. We get a little wiggle room with the review week, so we will be having some fun with oviparous animals this week. It fits perfectly with the second half of unit 6, which is all about animal life cycles. Skills: Classifying and categorizing, using context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words, building vocabulary Math: Writing and telling time to the hour and half hour, identifying the parts of a clock, and estimating lengths of time. *We will continue to practice double and triple digit addition and subtraction in small groups* Writing: Kids are working through the writing process to finish their "Imogene Antlers" rewrites. They are focusing on editing their own work, and checking for all the structures of fiction: beginning, middle, end, problem, and solution. Science: Oviparous animals, and animal life cycles. It is a great opportunity for new teachers to see other classrooms and how centers and LEAD 21 are implemented. I'm proud that our kids are going to be able to show them how we do writer's workshop, reading, and centers. *To accommodate our guests, we will be trading music classes with Mrs. Sery. We will have music MONDAY instead of Wednesday this week. * Weekly Objectives: Reading: Theme Question: How do living things grow and change? Focus Question: Skills: Building vocabulary, sequencing, fact vs. opinion Math: Counting coins, solving word problems involving money. Writing: Structure of fiction (beginning, middle, end or problem, solution). Writing dialogue. Science: Form and Function: How are seeds spread, and how does a seed become a plant?
