We begin Unit 5 this week: Unlock the Past-Build the Future
Theme Question: How do communities change, and how do they stay the same?
Focus Question: What was life like in the past?
Skills: Summarize (ask your child to summarize their reading at home... it's a surprisingly difficult skill to weed out the "important" info), informational text features (table of contents, index, bold print, captions, etc.), pronouns (he, she, we, they , them, us, etc.)

Math:
Addition/Subtraction strategies for two digit problems. This week we will focus on the expanded form strategy of solving equations. PLEASE see the online videos for more information on these important strategies!
Writing:
This week we will learn about biographies and practice writing one. We will research President Lincoln, fill out a graphic organizer with facts, and write a biography using text evidence to back up our facts.
Science:
Project Lead the Way is going well! We are learning about engineers, matter (anything that has mass and takes up space), and changes in matter. We learned last week that some changes are reversible, and some are irreversible. This week, we will learn about conductors and insulators with a fun experiment using handwarmers and other materials.
